Poker run to help Sunshine Kids

By Staff | Nov 12, 2009

The first poker run to benefit the children of Sunshine Kids will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by a block party from 1-5 p.m.
Prudential Florida Realty Managing Broker Linda “Kitty” Madden-Doyle said they have held events for the organization for the past seven years.
“Since Cape Coral is our newest office in this area it’s the first one we’ve done on our own,” she said.
Madden-Doyle said Sunshine Kids is the corporate charity that Prudential Real Estate Affiliates chose.
“We at Prudential Florida Realty embrace it wholeheartedly,” she said. “We give the kids a chance to be just kids, not kids with cancer.”
The poker run starts at the Harley Davidson in Fort Myers.
Pre-registration is $15 and can be done by calling 443-3160. Registration can also be accomplished Saturday for $25.
Those who register will receive an identifying Kids with Cancer pin.
Madden-Doyle said the route will go through Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Pine Island.
“Our stops include Anthony’s on the Blvd., Beef O’Brady’s, The Ragged Ass Saloon, Bert’s Bar and Stevie Tomato’s Sports Page,” she said.
The winner of the poker run will be awarded a 8GB iPod with a camera, dual chargers, headpiece and carrying case, along with a trophy.
The block party will be held at the Fountain Shops on Pine Island Road. There will be a silent auction, Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, music, food, drinks and crafts.
In a Chinese auction, participants buy tickets and put them in a drawing for the item they want to win. The tickets will be sold for $1 each, Madden-Doyle said.
More than 40 prizes will be given away during the event. Some of the prizes include a Key West Express certificate, Chico’s Warehouse shopping experience, BlackBerry party baskets and Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre tickets.
The silent auction, which will feature gifts for golfers, will conclude at 4:30 p.m. The auction items will include a golf package for four players at Venetian-Triburon, Pelican Preserve-Eagle Ridge, Herons Glen-Pelican Preserve, Palmetto Pines-Pelican Preserve and Miromar Lakes-Raptor Bay.
Madden-Doyle said the merchants in the plaza will participate in the block party with silent auctions being held at each store.
“There’s something for everyone and it all benefits the kids,” she said.
