Prep Report: Tritons turn back Cats 3-2

Senior Matt Isherwood, a staple player in the Mariner Tritons defensive backfield, scored his first career goal in Thursday night’s 3-2 win at Estero.
The Tritons built a 3-1 lead with 17 minutes left in the second half and withstood a late surge by Estero. Matt Brust saved six shots in 80 minutes of action.
Senior Kyle Turner and junior Juan Rincon each scored once, and senior Christian Marin had two assists.
John Teeter contributed with a strong defensive game and Patrick Lewis came off the bench and helped the Tritons at a variety of positions.
The Tritons (2-0, 1-0 district) play at Immokalee Monday.
Ida Baker 3, South Fort Myers 2: Baker bounced back from a season-opening loss to Fort Myers with a hard-fought win over host South Fort Myers.
Daniel Sharkey banged in the game-winner from eight yards out with three minutes left.
The Bulldogs tied it 2-2 early in the second half on a goal by Winston Marin. Freshman Marlon Herrera scored the first goal for the Bulldogs.
Senior goalkeeper Jose Zuniga made nine saves. Nick Presti, Brian Leon and Jonathan Alvarez each picked up one assist.
The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0 district) play at Plantation American Heritage Saturday.
Cape Coral 5, Lemon Bay 0: Sophomore Santi Villamil recorded his third straight shutout, registering three saves, and Guillermo Duque scored two goals, leading Cape past visiting Lemon Bay.
The Seahawks defeated Island Coast 8-0 and Port Charlotte 2-0 earlier this week.
“So far, so good,” Seahawks coach David Torres said. “We seem to have good chemistry out of the gate.”
Shane Pacheco, Caio Amaral and Paolo Acosta each scored one goal, and Kevin Lopera contributed two assists.
Cape (3-0) hosts Lehigh Monday.
Bishop Verot 4, Evangelical Christian 0: Bishop Verot’s stellar defense and goalkeeping was evident again in a shutout victory over Evangelical Christian. In four games, including two preseason matches, the Vikings have not allowed a goal.
Austin Doyle scored first for the Vikings, who tacked on three insurance scores by Matt Mathis, Bryant Whittaker and Andrew Palumbo in the second half to seal the win.
Goalkeeper Lucas Polk made seven saves for the Vikings (2-0), who host Gateway Charter Tuesday.
Girls Soccer
North Fort Myers 3, Fort Myers 1: Junior midfielder Alex Smith struck for the go-ahead goal and host North Fort Myers topped Fort Myers.
Smith scored off an assist from freshman Casey Gentile. Gentile added a goal, which was set up by Ashley LaPierre.
North’s first goal came courtesy of Melinda Lukas. Defensive captain Brooke Trivett had the assist.
Goalkeeper Brianna Abatisti made 10 saves for the Red Knights (3-1), who play at Evangelical Christian Monday.
Estero 2, Mariner 1: Junior Kelsea Whitaker scored her sixth goal of the season, but the host Tritons fell one goal short against Estero.
The Tritons (2-2) have lost consecutive tough games, which included a 3-2 setback against North Fort Myers Tuesday.
Junior goalkeeper Samantha Greenwell had five saves.
Mariner heads to Cypress Lake Tuesday.
Cape Coral 2, Lemon Bay 0: After a scoreless first half, sophomore Jamie Smith and junior Carrie McDonald each scored quickly in the second half, lifting the Seahawks past Lemon Bay.
The Seahawks (2-1) then turned it over to their defense and goalkeeper Amanda Kopale, who made 12 saves for the shutout.
The Seahawks travel to Lehigh Monday.
Bishop Verot 9, LaBelle 3: Kady Otzko led the attack with three goals and Lauren Cento and Angie Colon each scored twice, as the host Vikings stormed past LaBelle.
Midfielder Kayley Clay created several of the Vikings’ scoring chances. She finished with four assists and had one goal. Mary Keezel also scored for the Vikings (4-1), who host Lemon Bay at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Swimming
A large contingent of swimmers and divers represented Cape Coral in Thursday’s Class 2A state meet at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. They held their own against the state’s best.
Cape High placed 12th in the girls’ standings out of 47 schools that received points. The 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams highlighted the effort, finishing sixth and fifth, respectively.
Both relay teams consisted of seniors Christina Todd, Meghan Cotugno, Lauren Smith and sophomore Olivia Langford.
Todd, Cotugno and Langford all made the finals in two events. Todd placed 12th in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Cotugno grabbed 17th in the 50 freestyle and 16th in the 100 freestyle, and Langford was 13th in both the 200 and 500 freestyle races.
In boys’ swimming, North Fort Myers senior Greg Bowser capped his career with a fifth-place time in the 500 freestyle.
Cape’s 200 medley relay team of Graham Murza, Ryan Cichielo, Tyler Thresher and Antonio Alvarez placed 10th. Fort Myers captured the state title in that event.
Murza placed 17th in the 100 backstroke and Thresher came in 12th in the 100 breastroke.
Baker freshman Sean O’Connor ended his stellar postseason by placing 11th in boys’ diving. O’Connor, who won LCAC and district titles, was the first Baker swimmer or diver to participate in the state meet.
Cape’s tandem of junior Jeanette Conrad and senior Rebecca Schreiber placed 16th and 19th, respectively, in girls’ diving.
