Prep Report: Vikings dominate Gators

It was a Bishop Verot kind of night in high school sports Thursday. The Vikings faced the Island Coast Gators in boys’ and girls’ soccer and basketball – winning all four matchups by comfortable margins.

Jacquard Hagan and Nate Howard led the Vikings’ 66-26 triumph over the Gators on the hardwood.

Quinten Payne chipped in with 11 points. Howard grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Hagan handed out five assists.

Jordan Hrkach topped the Gators in scoring with nine points.

Verot (2-1) hosts Florida iar Academy at 5 p.m. Saturday. Island Coast is at Charlotte Friday.

Girls Basketball

Bishop Verot 60, Island Coast 38: Katlyn Payne pumped in a game-high 23 points to lead Bishop Verot past Island Coast.

Lindsay Ellis topped the Gators with 16 points.

The Gators (2-6) play at Charlotte Saturday while the Vikings (5-0) host Dunbar on Wednesday.

Boys Soccer

Mariner 1, Charlotte 0: Mariner made a first-half goal hold up for a shutout victory at Charlotte.

Lansky Fradlin fired a shot inside the box that caromed off a defender right to Juan Rincon, who knocked in the game-winning goal 20 minutes into the first half.

Tritons goalkeeper Matt Brust made eight saves to register his fourth shutout, supported by the outstanding defensive work of John Teeter and Matt Isherwood.

“We had three or four opportunities to score in the second half, but couldn’t finish them,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas.

The Tritons (6-4) visit Fort Myers Tuesday.

Bishop Verot 8, Island Coast 0: Bishop Verot turned a close game into a rout with a barrage of five second-half goals to blank Island Coast.

Goalkeeper Jonathan Simpson made 10 saves for the Gators (0-7-1), who visit North Fort Myers at 6 p.m. Friday.

Oasis 1, Seacrest 1: Oasis scored first, but had to settle for a tie with Naples Seacrest.

With an assist from Oscar Trujillo, Danny Rawley got the Sharks’ goal three minutes into the second half. The 1-0 lead stood until eight minutes remained when Seacrest knotted the contest.

Goalkeeper Jessy Lyons made 30 saves for the Sharks (2-2-2), who visit Tavernier on Dec. 1.

Girls Soccer

Bishop Verot 9, Island Coast 0: Six different players scored goals as Bishop Verot recorded its fifth shutout of the season.

Stephanie Zavada led the Vikings with three goals, backed by Stephanie Lamboy with two and one each by Taylor Puls, Kadie Otzko, Cailyn Rizzo and Sophia Quinonez. Kayley Clay had two assists and Otzko had one.

Rizzo and Clay shared goalkeeping duties, but did not have to make a single save to post the shutout.

In 12 games, the Vikings have outscored their opponents 60-12.

Verot (10-1-1) hosts Dunbar at 6 p.m. Friday. Island Coast (0-7) visits North Fort Myers Friday.

Charlotte 2, Mariner 1: One goal in each half was all the scoring Charlotte needed to hold off Mariner.

The Tritons’ lone goal came from Kelsea Whitaker with an assist from Rebecca Smith in the game’s final two minutes.

“There were not a lot of shots by either side,” said Tritons coach Beth Gedde.

Goalkeepers Samantha Greenwell and Jessica Parks combined for five saves for the Tritons (5-5-2), who play at Fort Myers Tuesday.
