The Lee County Sheriff’s held its December Do The Right Thing ceremony and honored some 15 students who attend Lee County Schools. The ceremony took place on Dec. 17 at the Board Room of the School board of Lee county at the Lee County Public Education Center on Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

Each month throughout the 2009-2010 school year, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office honors the positive actions of our community’s students through the student recognition program, said John McGraw, who heads up the program and announced the names at the ceremony last week. He said the goal of “Do The Right Thing” is to reinforce positive behavior among youths and to establish students as role models for their peers.

Among those honored were the following local students:

Timothy Katz of Alva is a seventh grade student at Alva Middle School. He was honored helping out at the school clinic. On the way home, the student he was helping fainted and he notified the bus driver who notified the parents who met the bus at the drop off point. Timothy took off her jacket and applied water to her face until she woke up. During the remainder of the ride Timothy kept making the student stay awake by talking with her and having her draw on a piece of paper.

“Timothy is a good role model to the other students that were on the bus and he did the right thing,” McGraw said.

Lake Sandusky of Lehigh Acres is a seventh grade student at Alva Middle School. School principal Steve Hutnick said a student was choking on his lunch and could not breathe. Lake acted immediately and got the student help. The object was able to be removed and the student was fine.

“Lake’s quick response was potentially life saving. Lake is a true role model for her peers,” McGraw said.

Julie Shelhorn of Fort Myers is a seventh grade student at Alva Middle School.

Alva Middle School, School Resource Officer Deputy Bill Patton wrote in his nomination letter that “Julie said that she observed what was clearly a safety concern at her school. She immediately informed me of what she had seen. As a result of her efforts Alva Middle School was made safer that day. Julie is young person with great courage and concern for others. She also demonstrates honesty and is a good role model for other students.”
