Next month’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

ADULTS

Book Discussion: Patrick Smith’s “A Land Remembered”

3:30 p.m. Monday, January 4

Read “A Land Remembered” by Patrick Smith and discuss it with fellow community members. The East County Book Discussion Group is open to all.

The Basics of “Windows”

3 p.m. Tuesday, January 12

Bill Sklodowski returns to teach the basics of Windows and show some of the real benefits and tricks. You will learn the anatomy of a window; using multiple windows; making the taskbar work; shortcuts everyone can use; and toolbars and special keys. You will also learn how to use Windows Explorer – the key program that lets you manage your files and pictures. Registration is requested.

English Caf

10 a.m. Fridays, January 15, 22, 29

Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

Search Engine Basics

3 p.m. Tuesday, January 26

Bill Sklodowski introduces beginners to one of the most popular search engines on the web. You will learn how to search for information, images and products. His lecture will include search basics, using keywords, search operators and more. Bill has been associated for many years with the Southwest Florida PC Users Group. Registration is requested.

FAMILY

Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10 a.m. Saturday, January 2

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants.

Family Storytime

6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, January 19, 26

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Wednesdays, January 20, 27

10 a.m. Thursdays, January 21, 28

Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.

KIDS

Library Idol/Guitar Hero

2 p.m. Saturday, January 16

Learn about songwriting and the importance of lyrics. Then, take the stage and perform karaoke or play Guitar Hero. All will leave with a (temporary) rock star tattoo!

Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, January 20, 27

10:30 a.m. Thursdays, January 21, 28

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes.

Kids Read Down Fines

2 3 p.m. Saturday, January 30

Do you have library fines? Take care of them by reading! Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. For ages 18 and younger.

Love Your Library

2 p.m. Saturday, February 13

Help celebrate “Love Your Library” month with stories, games, and crafts. We have stacks and stacks of love for you!

Love Your Pet

2 p.m. Saturday, February 20

February 20th is “Love Your Pet Day.” Learn about responsible pet ownership and how to love your pet all year long.

TEENS

East County Anime Club

4:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 5

Join a group of teens with an interest in Anime, Manga and other aspects of Japanese culture. Snacks provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Food for Thought

4:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 12

Enjoy snacks, share your thoughts about specific art pieces and create your own masterpiece with art supplies provided! Celebrate historical works of art through replicas from the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. To see the replicas of specific art pieces in person and write down your thoughts in preparation for the program, please see the East County Regional Library’s Young Adult Area. The program content is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and presented by Cameo Hinman. Art supplies are provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. For grades 612. Registration is required.

Wii Guitar Hero World Tour!

4:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 26

Fire up the fretboard, crank up the amp and get ready to rock like never before. Guitar Hero World Tour drops you into the spotlight of the largest and most legendary rock concert ever. Now drop that air guitar, tune your exclusive new Les Paul Guitar Controller and shred the night away with Wii Guitar Hero World Tour. Registration is required.
