Wall Street Journal recognizes Florida Rep
Drama critic Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal counted Florida Rep’s Dancing at Lughnasa among only a handful of productions on Broadway, across the country and in Canada that he considered to be the “Best of 2009.”
“As I look back on the reviews I filed from every corner of America, I have no trouble singling out the high spots,” he said.
“I also got much pleasure out of a strong pair of revivals that I saw in Florida, Palm Beach Dramaworks’ production of The Chairs – and Florida Repertory Theatre’s lovely version of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa,” Teachout said on Dec. 18.
On January 16, 2009 Teachout reviewed Florida Rep’s production of Dancing at Lughnasa, saying he “never expected to run across so stirring a production of Dancing at Lughnasa a stone’s throw from the Gulf of Mexico.”
He called the production “a model of creative taste … profoundly satisfying,” and told America to “make haste to Fort Myers, where the weather is warm and the theater fine.”
“We are thrilled to be honored by the Wall Street Journal’s Best of 2009,” said Florida Rep Producing Artistic Director Robert Cacioppo.” It is an honor to be counted among some of the best theatre happening in America, and it is a real validation of the past 12 years we’ve spent building this company.”
Florida Repertory Theatre is now in the midst of its 12th season, and will open the gripping new drama, Opus by Micahel Hollinger, on January 5, 2010.
