Herbert E. Randall Jr.
Herbert Ezra Randall Jr., 86, formerly of Lehigh Acres, but now of the Charlotte N.C., area., died Dec. 28, 2009 due to complications from a stroke.
He was known as “Bud” to his family and friends. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II. He was married to Virginia “Ginny” Van Winkle and spent 35 years as an engineer with Bell Telephone Laboratories.
After graduating from high school in 1940, Randall joined the Navy Seabees as an electrician building bases during World War II in the Aleutian Island, Alaska and Okinawa, Japan. After the war, he attended USC Berkeley where he met and married his wife on April 19, 1952 in Plainfield, N.J. He went on to join Bell Telephone Laboratories where as a member of the technical staff for 35 years, he played a role in building today’s modern telecommunications infrastructure.
Since retirement in 1986 Randall and his wife enjoyed extensive travel, exploring the U.S. with their recreational vehicle and finally settling in Lehigh Acres.
Late in life, Randall enjoyed wood carving. He carved hundreds of pieces and won several competitions. Randall and his wife moved to the Charlotte, N.C., area in 2008 to be closer to their family. Both are life-long members of the United Methodist Church and they worship at Belair Methodist, Indian Land, S.C.
Randall is survived by his wife, Ginny; two sons, Ronald in Colorado and Kenneth and his wife, Laura, and grandson, Jack, in North Carolina. His daughter, Amy R. Gamble died in 2007 leaving son-in-law, Dave Gamble and two grandsons, David and Daniel. He is also survived by nephews, Buddy and Bobby Gibbs in Maryland.
A small private service for family and friends was held in Charlotte, N.C. on Dec. 30 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home in Charlotte, N.C.
