Asking voters’ opinions on SMD voting

By Staff | Jan 15, 2010

To The Editor:

For sometime Lehigh has heard about single member district voting as opposed to voting-at-large. This SMD voting would be relevant to Lehigh Acres and District 5 voters inasmuch as they and only they will elect their commissioner.

Now an overflow vote from other areas can decide who is elected to represent District 5.

Lee County’s Charter Review decided in favor of five SMD in 2008, recommended to Lee County commissioners in June 2008 only to be voted down 3-2.

Last November, the Lee County Commission revoted the issue. This time the vote for change passed.

Now to support this new opportunity a PAC/ Committee for Common sense Government has been formed.

This group at present is supported by active individuals in the Democratic, Republican and Libertarian parties. All will wok to get this amendment passed on the 2010 ballot.

I would like to extend an opportunity to independent voters to express their voices on this issue. Some 82,377 voters are in this group. Let our committee hear from you. You can send your letters to the editor of this newspaper.
