David L. Hewitt

David L. Hewitt, 73, of Lehigh Acres died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010 at home. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from General Motors after 30 years. While living in Flint, Mich., he volunteered at the For-Mar Nature Preserve. After moving to Florida in 2000, he continued his volunteer work at the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium. Hewitt had a passion for nature and the outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting and was an excellent and gifted woodcarver. He was president of the Amberwood Neighborhood Group for the last two years and also attended New Life Assembly of God Church in Lehigh.

He is preceded in death by his son, Robert Jerome Hewitt in 1998, his parents, Donald and Marcella and his stepfather, Jim Maine.

He is survived by his wife, Anna, his children, Ronald Jason (Mary), Richard Jay, and Diana Lynn (Darrin) Neitzke, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; his sisters, Marion (Chuck) Hughes, Billie (Mike) Girard, Pat (Rod) Schoals and Marcia Anderson, and his brother, James (Carole) Maine and his former wife Wanda Blankenship.

Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 22 from 4 p.m. until the funeral service at 6 p.m. at Lee Memorial Park Funeral Home, 12777 St. Rd. 82. Fort Myers, FL 33913. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a committal service at Lee Memorial Park Cemetery.
