Verot boys capture Class 3A state soccer championship
Brendan Abernethy and Andrew Palumbo scored first-half goals to lead Bishop Verot to a 4-3 victory Saturday over North Broward Prep in the Florida Class 3A boys’ soccer championship game at Tampa University’s Pepin Stadium. The championship is the second in boys’ soccer in the school’s history.
Six of the seven goals were scored in the first half with the Vikings leading 4-2 at halftime. North Borward cut the margin to one with a goal with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Abernethy scored three goals and Palumbo had one while Vikings’ goalkeeper Lucas Polk made 14 saves to preserve the victory.
Verot took an early 2-0 lead only to have North Broward rally to tie the game. Verot answered with two goals before the intermission to establish the eventual game-winning margin.
“Our goal from the start was to win the state championship,” said Vikings coach Tom McGlinn. “We knew we would have to beat (Tampa) Berkeley (Prep) along the way, so once we got past Berkeley we felt like we could win (the title).”
The Vikings (26-1-2) defeated Jacksonville Episcopal 2-1 Thursday in the Class 3A state semifinal to get to Saturday’s championship match.
