Prep Report: Seahawks earn first win, 8-4

By Staff | Mar 6, 2010

Left-hander Sean Brady had a rocky first inning, surrendering six runs, as the Ida Baker Bulldogs handed the Cape Coral Seahawks their first baseball victory of the season Friday night.

The key hit was a two-run double by Brandon Marshall in the first inning that put the Seahawks in front 3-0 en route to an 8-4 triumph over their city and district rivals.

“We just can’t get past that,” said Bulldogs coach Ryan Jackson. “We’ve given up 19 runs in the first inning of our four home games, and you just can’t expect to win games doing that.”

Cain Spangler and Derek Pandolfi contributed two hits and Brett Hobaugh collected three of the Seahawks’ total of 10 hits. Pandolfi’s drove in a run in the third with one of their three doubles in the game.

“We hit the ball well against Brady,” said Seahawks coach Mike Gorton. “We’ve been focusing on hitting for the last week or so. To get our first win against Baker is a proud moment for me because we’ve worked so hard and I respect those guys at Baker.”

Justin Pinto had two hits and Ryan Hutson contributed a two-run single in the fourth inning to lead the Bulldogs (3-4), who face the Seahawks (1-6) in their next game Thursday at Cape High.

Back-to-back hits by Thomas Dougherty and Josh Garcia produced two runs and the Vikings added one more before the inning was over to go up 6-3.

After Verot scored once in the seventh to take a 7-4 lead, the Gators rallied for three in the bottom of the inning to send it into an extra inning.

A Verot throwing error started the game-tying rally. Cameron Gellinger beat out an infield single and Manka (2-for-3, 3 RBI) doubled to drive in one run. With two out, Pablo Matos lofted a fly ball to center field that was dropped allowing two runs to score tying the game at 7-7.

With one out, Kyle Harding executed the suicide squeeze play to produce the game-winning run.
