FGCU earns first A-Sun wins
The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s softball team recorded their first two wins in the Atlantic Sun Conference Wednesday night by sweeping a doubleheader in walk-off fashion against Kennesaw State 4-3 and 4-2.
The wins boost the Eagles’ season record to 11-11 (2-0 A-Sun) heading into the three-day USF Under Armour Showcase that starts Friday.
Courtney Platt was the hero in both games, doubling home the game-winner in the eighth inning of game one and capping the night with a two-run, walk-off homer in the second game.
The Eagles left eight runners on base through the first five innings of the opener and trailed 3-0 before scoring two runs in the sixth inning.
Jessica Gary led off the bottom of the seventh of game two with a solid single, bringing Platt to the plate. Platt delivered the game-winning hit with her team- and conference-leading sixth home run.
n Athlete of the Week: Freshman Mariah Fernandez led the Eagles to a 4-4 record last week, including a 2-3 showing at the Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater to earn Female Student-Athlete of the Week honors.
During the eight-game stretch, the North Fort Myers High grad Fernandez was 9-for-20 with 7 RBI, two doubles, a home run and seven runs scored in addition to one stolen base.
