Crist needs to look into LCEC operations

By Staff | Mar 16, 2010

To The Editor:

When Gov. Crist was in Fort Myers last week, a reporter told him about the problems many people in Southwest Florida are having with the Lee County Electric Coop.

Gov. Crist said he has appointed new members to the Public Service Commission and will talk to them.

Does the governor know that the PSC has little to no control over LCEC? I don’t think he knows that they only overlook the rate structure, as LCEC stated on TV. Apparently LCEC sets its own rates and has little oversight from the state.

If you feel LCEC has not treated you right, you should write the governor’s office; no local elected officials seem interested in getting into the problems that has been reported by a local TV station for the past few weeks. I think the salaries of the top people at LCEC should be looked into and published, since it is apparently a coop and owned by the people it serves. LCEC should be paying out equity to its owners, the rate payers, and it should have a heart and work with people who are having financial problems and can’t always pay a bill on time. They should not be allowed to demand ridiculously high deposits which is hard to ever get back. Florida Power and Light was reported in the news to be cheaper with its electric rates than LCEC
