Prep Report: Mariner cuts up Lemon Bay, 7-3

Audry Santana and Martin Evans delivered two hits apiece to stake Mariner to an early lead and the Tritons held on to beat Lemon Bay 7-3 Friday.

Walter Cleary, who pitched four scoreless innings while giving up two hits, and Audry Santana both tripled to spark the Tritons’ offense.

The Tritons (8-1) are at North Fort Myers Tuesday. They will complete a game suspended last week by rain at 5 p.m. before playing the regularly scheduled district game immediately afterward.

Cypress Lake 10, Cape Coral 0: Jay Murray struck out 11 batters and pitched a complete-game one-hitter in Cypress Lake’s five-inning victory over Cape Coral Friday.

Brad Kopale had the lone hit for the Seahawks (2-8), who host Ida Baker Monday to complete the game suspended by rain last week.

Softball

Cape Coral 15, Cypress Lake 2: Amanda Kopale had four hits and blasted a grand slam home run to propel Cape Coral to victory at Cypress Lake Friday.

Tara Higgins and Amanda Hurley contributed two hits apiece. Brenna Harkins limited the Panthers to three hits and struck out six.

The Seahawks (8-6) play at South Fort Myers Tuesday.

North Fort Myers 13, South Fort Myers 2: Jasmine Santiago and Katrissa Rowell accounted for five extra-base hits to power North Fort Myers to victory at South Fort Myers Friday.

Santiago (3-for-3) had two doubles and a triple. Rowell (2-for-5) doubled and belted a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Allie Kennedy contributed two hits with three RBI. Jackie Owen added three hits and scattered five hits while striking out 13 to earn the win on the mound.

The Red Knights (11-1) host Mariner Tuesday.

Mariner 4, Lemon Bay 0: Nikki Roderiques pitched her second consecutive 13-strikeout, no-hit game Friday as Mariner blanked Lemon Bay. Roderiques’ first ho-hit game was a five-inning win Thursday over South Fort Myers.

Cody Sawyer (2-for-4) drove in two runs and Carrie Grigiski (2-for-3) drove in another for the Tritons (10-1), who pay a visit to district rival North Fort Myers Tuesday night.

Gulliver Prep Slamfest: Ida Baker took the defending Class 3A state champions down to the wire before Plantation American Heritage pulled out a 5-4 victory Friday in the Gulliver Prep Slamfest tournament in Miami.

Baker took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run home run by Jessica Nuccio. Louie Ross added a solo homer in the sixth inning that brought the Bulldogs to the final margin.

In a game earlier in the day, Okeechobee scratched out a run in the first inning and held on to beat Baker 1-0. The Bulldogs (8-6) play two more games in the tournament Saturday.

Football

Cape Coral Seahawks: Brad Metheny, 44, was named the new head football coach Thursday by Cape High principal Eric McFee.

Metheny brings 23 years of coaching experience to the job and has never had a losing season. The former player and graduate assistant at West Virginia spent the past four years at Frostproof.

McFee said Friday he hopes to have the hiring paperwork finished in time for Metheny to assume his duties on March 29.

Mike Goebbel resigned the position as Cape football coach citing health reasons five weeks ago.

Girls Tennis

North Fort Myers 7, Cypress Lake 0: North Fort Myers swept all matches from Cypress Lake in straight sets Friday.

The Red Knights (5-4) host Island Coast Tuesday.

Rugby

Barbarians 6, Blackhawks 5: Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Cape Blackhawks came back to take a 5-3 lead on a try by Andrew Iverson, but the Barbarians (5-2) kicked a late field goal to defeat the Blackhawks 6-5 last Saturday.

The Blackhawks (4-3) travel to Fort Lauderdale Saturday to play Weston. A win could help the Blackhawks get back into the playoffs for a third year in a row.
