Two weeks after the death of Lee County Commissioner Bob Janes, 12 people have submitted applications seeking an appointment to Jane’s vacant seat.

Janes died March 10 at age 78. He represented District 1, which includes Sanibel, Captiva, Cape Coral and Pine Island. Services for Janes were held March 22.

Gov. Charlie Crist plans to pick someone to fill the seat until the November election, when voters in Lee can elect a new commissioner to finish Janes term. His term expires in 2012.

According to documents provided by the governor’s office, four men and one woman had applied for the appointment.

The applicants last week included: Wayne Daltry, former director of Smart Growth for Lee County; Bruce J. Scott, former state representative and Lee commissioner; John Manning, a former county commissioner and Cape Coral council member; Richard Hoffman, a deputy sheriff with the Lee County Sheriffs Office; and Carletha Griffin, the owner of a consulting business.

Last Wednesday, seven new applicants – five men and two women – came forward.

They included Lee County School Board Member Robert Chilmonik; Linda Carter, of Lehigh Acres, a member of the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Corp (LACPC) and executive director for Emergency Preparedness for the ADA Advisory Board of Southwest Florida; Nicholas Sacca, formerly with Adecco Employment; Charles Dauray, CEO and chairman of College of Life Foundation; Chelsey M. Perry Sr., a retired Fort Myers resident; Donna Loibl, a retired Matlacha resident; and Gerald Finan, a substitute teacher.
