Blades clinch playoff spot with 4-3 win
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Florida Everblades put a season-high 53 shots on goal, getting four of them to hit the back of the net to clinch a playoff spot in a 4-3 victory Thursday night over the Charlotte Checkers.
The Everblades’ win also snapped the Checkers’ 10-game unbeaten streak in regulation, and pulled the Everblades (36-23-4-5) within four points of fifth place in the ECHL’s American Conference behind Charlotte (39-21-4-3) and Cincinnati.
Ryan Lang, Ross Carlson, Brady Calla and Ernie Hartleib scored goals for the Blades, and goalie Chris Beckford-Tsue made 36 saves.
An entertaining first period saw the Everblades go to the locker room down 2-1, despite outshooting the Checkers 19-15 and deserving a better fate after the first 20 minutes.
The Everblades started the second period quickly and tied the game on Carlson’s short-handed goal. Florida regained the lead at 3-2 at 14:35 as Mathew Pistilli set up Calla on a two-on-one break.
Hartlieb tallied an unassisted goal just 1:20 into the third period for a two-goal lead, which proved to be the game winner.
The Everblades continue their four-game road trip at the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
