Miracle post first victory, 2-0

By Staff | Apr 14, 2010

After being swept in a season-opening four-game series against Bradenton, the Fort Myers Miracle earned their first victory Tuesday night 2-0 against the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Kyle Gibson (1-1) gave a strong pitching performance by keeping hitters off balance with a strong fastball and devastating slider. He allowed just three hits in six shutout innings, striking out six with no walks.

In just his second professional outing, Gibson was able to improve upon his first start in which he only lasted 3 2/3 innings in the opening loss to Bradenton.

The Miracle bullpen was nearly perfect in relief Tuesday, allowing one baserunner over the final three frames. Major League veteran Ron Mahay pitched a 1-2-3 seventh before Billy Bullock shut Charlotte down in the eighth and ninth to pick up his first career save.

Bullock, in his first full professional season after being drafted in the second round of the 2009 MLB draft from of the University of Florida, struck out four batters and allowed only one baserunner to notch his first career save in a Miracle uniform.

The victory also is the first for Miracle manager Jake Mauer.

The Miracle broke the scoreless game in the fifth when Yangervis Solarte drove in two runs with the bases loaded and no outs on a fly ball that dropped just out of the reach of Reid Fronk down the right-field line.

The Miracle (1-4) play the Stone Crabs again Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. with Michael Tarsi (0-1) slated to take the hill.
