Prep Report: Seahawks forced to win in 9th inning

By Staff | Apr 14, 2010

The Cape Coral Seahawks had to work overtime Tuesday night in order to come away with a 5-4 victory over North Fort Myers.

The Seahawks saw a 3-1 lead get wiped out by the scrappy Red Knights, who actually took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning.

The Red Knights tied it up in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs set up by crafty baserunning.

Josh Dean drew a one-out walk and stole second. After Stefan Williams walked, Roel Fernandez hit a double-play ground ball to third. The Seahawks got the forceout at second, but the relay throw to first was wild, allowing Dean to score.

After Fernandez stole second, Chaz Richards reached on an infield single. With two out, Richards took off for second to coax a throw that allowed Fernandez to trot home with the tying run.

North took a 4-3 lead in the sixth. Corey Jackson was hit by a pitch to open the inning. With two out, Dean reached on an error – one of five Seahawk errors in the game – and Jackson raced home from second.

The Seahawks woke up in the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. Brad Kopale was hit by a pitch to open the inning, but was forced at second on Brett Hobaugh’s groundout to second. The relay throw to first was wild and Hobaugh wound up on second base. Cain Spangler, who was 4-for-5 on the night, ripped a double to the left field fence to drive in Hobaugh with the tying run.

Spangler again figured into the offense in the ninth inning. Hobaugh led off with a single and stole second just ahead of Spangler’s single to deep right field with Hobaugh scoring the game-winning run.

Riverdale 1, North Fort Myers 0: North’s Jackie Owen was locked in a fierce pitcher’s duel with Riverdale’s Liana Derringer through nine innings. Owen was the first to blink and Riverdale capitalized to win the LCAC championship in the 10th inning.

A double by Bethany Wright and a fielder’s choice play that left both runners safe on the bases opened the 10th inning for the Raiders. After a groundout, Owen walked the next batter to load the bases.

Then Allie Herring coaxed Owen into another walk to force in the game-winning run.
