Miracle shut out by Crabs, 7-0
After allowing just one run in the first two games against the Charlotte Stone Crabs, the Fort Myers Miracle couldn’t get their own bats going in a 7-0 loss Thursday.
Nick Barnese (2-0) pitched seven strong shutout innings and allowed only three hits while striking out five for the Stone Crabs (3-2).
The Tampa Bay Rays’ third-round pick in 2007 needed only 80 pitches in the seven innings.
The Miracle (2-5) fell short of the three-game series sweep after winning game 2-0 Tuesday and 2-1 Wednesday.
The game was a close through the first four-plus innings Thursday, until the Stone Crabs chased Miracle starter Bobby Lanigan in the fifth. After picking up two quick outs in the inning, an error allowed things to continue. Charlotte eventually scored two more in the frame.
Lanigan (0-1) picked up his first loss of the season, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out five in 4 2/3 innings.
Even though the Miracle managed four hits on the night, three were for extra-bases. Dan Rohlfing doubled in the third for his first hit of the season, while Evan Bigley and Drew Thompson added late-inning doubles. Thompson, along with Yangervis Solarte who had the other hit, extended their hitting streaks to five games.
Fort Myers heads to Palm Beach for a weekend series against the Cardinals to wrap up a seven-game road swing.
Right-hander Bruce Pugh (0-1) will make his second start of the season Friday night.
