By Staff | Apr 17, 2010

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The FGCU softball team returned to the win column Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at Belmont.

The Eagles took game one 2-1 before dominating the second game 11-4. Lauran Ziegler collected three hits and four RBI on the day, including her second home run of the season.

With the wins, the Eagles improve to 22-26 overall and 10-6 in the A-Sun, while Belmont drops to 7-37, 3-11 in conference play.

Game one was a classic pitcher’s duel with only seven total hits in the game. After two scoreless innings, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the third on an infield single by Ziegler.

Belmont tied it up on a squeeze play in the fifth inning.

FGCU answered with a run in the sixth inning, again mounting a rally with two outs. Courtney Platt started the rally with a double, and Hayley O’Mara followed with a walk. Freshman Mariah Fernandez came up with a base hit down the right field line to drive in the game-winner.

In game two, the Eagles’ bats came to life early, plating five runs over the first two innings.

Ziegler led off the game with a walk, and moved up to second on a wild pitch. After advancing to third on a ground out, Ziegler scored on a fielder’s choice groundout.

The Eagles extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning and added three in the sixth, including a two-run home run by Fernandez, her sixth of the season.

The Eagles play a doubleheader Saturday at Lipscomb.
