Miracle win 3-2 in 10th

By Staff | Apr 20, 2010

At the end of an excellent pitching duel Monday night at Hammond Stadium, the Fort Myers Miracle prevailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning on a walk-off double by Drew Thompson.

With a 1-0 count and runners on first and second, Thompson launched a fastball from Josh Satow all the way to right field wall, scoring Chris Cates from second. The Miracle (3-7) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and picked up their first home victory in three tries.

All three of the Miracle’s early season wins have come against the Stone Crabs (5-4) after taking two of three games last week at Charlotte Sports Park.

Thompson finished the night 2-for-5 and extended his team-leading hitting streak to seven games. The second baseman has now hit safely in eight of nine games this season.

The Miracle got an outstanding effort from pitcher Blake Martin, who notched his first victory – holding the Stone Crabs scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings. He struck out three batters in his sharpest outing of the season, which was part of a combined 11-strikeout effort by the Miracle staff.

In the 10th, catcher Dan Rohlfing helped Martin out of a big jam. Isaias Velasquez reached with a two-out infield hit, then stole second to get into scoring position. He tried to steal third, but Rohlfing threw a perfect strike for the inning-ending out.

Rohlfing also had a big night at the plate, driving in the game’s first two runs on a double in the second inning. Charlotte starter Chris Andujar (0-1) then retired 10 consecutive batters before exiting before the seventh.

The teams square off again Tuesday and Wednesday at Hammond Stadium.
