Prep Report: Tritons oust Wave, 3-1
Mariner catcher Abby Willis delivered an RBI single in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch to help boost the Tritons to a 3-1 victory over Fort Myers Monday night in the quarterfinals of the District 4A-11 Tournament at Riverdale.
Mackenzie Hunt slugged a solo home run in the second inning to put the Tritons up 3-1 and pitcher Nikki Roderiques made it stand up through the next five scoreless innings. Roderiques scattered five hits, walked three and struck out eight.
The win sends the third-seeded Tritons (16-5) to the tournament semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday against No. 2-seeded North Fort Myers, a 5-0 winner over Estero.
Willis (2-for-3) and Lauren Joenicke (2-for-3) had multiple hits for the Tritons. Samantha Troast had two hits for the sixth-seeded Green Wave.
“We hit the ball well and made some good defensive plays,” said Tritons coach Donna Coleman. “We threw out one runner at the plate.”
The Tritons have had success against Estero, beating the Wildcats twice and were hoping an upset of North Fort Myers.
“We’d like to have an upset by Estero, but we will be ready to face North again,” Coleman said. “Anything can happen.”
