Miracle lose to Cardinals, 5-2
With the bases loaded and the game tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth, Palm Beach designated-hitter Francisco Rivera stroked a bases-clearing double to the left-field wall against reliever Billy Bullock to give the Cardinals a 5-2 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle Saturday night at Hammond Stadium.
Bullock, who was one pitch away from getting out of the inning with a two-strike count on Rivera, was tagged with his second loss of the year. Bullock also lost to the Cardinals 4-2 in extra innings in Palm Beach eight days ago.
The Miracle (5-10) now have lost all three games to Palm Beach, which evens its overall record at 7-7.
Matt Frevert, who pitched three innings of scoreless relief, picked up his third win of the year. Cardinals closer Casey Mulligan struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his third save of the year.
The Miracle worked out of numerous jams, with Cardinals stranding 10 men on the bases. Until the double by Rivera in the ninth, Cardinals hitters were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Miracle struggled with their control all night, walking a total of 10 batters on the night.
Kyle Gibson (1-1), who made his fourth start of the yea,r lasted five innings allowing one earned run on four hits, striking out four and walking three.
Arquimedes Nieto (0-1) had a perfect start to the night for the Cardinals retiring the first 10 batters before issuing a walk to Drew Thompson in the fourth.
After the Cardinals jumped on to top 1-0 in the top of the fifth, the Miracle evened things in the bottom of the inning. Chris Herrmann doubled with one out, then eventually came around to score on two consecutive wild pitches by Nieto.
Fort Myers took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, as Yangervis Solarte picked up a two-out RBI single that scored Chris Cates. Solarte had his best game of the season, finishing 3-for-4 on the night. It is his sixth multi-hit performance of the year. Solarte had three of the Miracle’s five hits on the night.
The Cardinals tied the game in the seventh against Miracle relievers Tony Davis and Michael Allen. After a single and two walks by Davis, Allen entered and hit a batter to tie the game 2-2. With one out and the bases-loaded, Allen recovered to strike out the next two batters to end the threat.
The Cardinals and Miracle continue their series Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium. Michael Tarsi (1-1, 5.14 ERA) will make his fourth start for the Miracle.
