More parents should be helping their children

By Staff | Apr 28, 2010

To The Editor:

Here is a good example of parents who are willing to work with all the teachers for their child’s future. I had eight single parents to come to me and asked me to help out their children. I told them that I needed for everyone to work together.

They all agreed. I have a Spring Tae Kwon Do camp for kids 6 to 14 on Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Some parents can not afford $90 a week for their child so they pay half that amount. Some parents can not afford to pay anything so we sponsor their child.

It is a Tae Kwon Do Camp. All the kids that bring their cell phone or I-pods need to put their cell phone at the front desk. Everything is scheduled for

students as to what to do and when to do it, when to eat lunch and snack.

On a recent Monday one young who is eight years girl old, accidentally bumped in to a boy who is six years old. He fell down and cried. I told them that is

part of playing when you run into each other, it is no be deal.

The-six year old boy understood and wanted to shake a girl that accidently bumped him. The 8-year-old girl refused to shake his hand. She sat on the

floor for one hour and on the couch another hour to protest.

She finally told me she was ready to shake his hand and go back to class.

You see, when parents work with teachers their kids will have a great future. I was an adopted child from Vietnam. I came here with my late mother and my

stepfather when I was 11 years old. I spoke no English. My parents were the ones who helped me with school homework and asked teachers for extra help.

I graduated from Riverdale in 1980 and from Edison College after two years. I own my own business and have taught Tae Kwon Do all of my adult life. If I can

do that with the parents’ help, other parents can do it, too.

Don’t put all the pressure on the school teachers to teach your child.
