Island Coast wins 3A-12 title, 5-4

By Staff | May 1, 2010

The Island Coast Gators were not satisfied just knocking on the door to their first District 3A-12 baseball championship. With another come-from-behind effort, the Gators broke down the door and pushed through to beat Bishop Verot 5-4 Friday night at Island Coast.

The win sends the Gators (18-9) into Tuesday’s Region 3-3A quarterfinal playoffs at home.

Trailing 4-1, the Gators scrambled to tie the game with a three-run rally in the fourth inning. Chase Vogelbach started the run with a double and Jordan Moody followed with a single. Moody stole second before Ryne Manka cracked a two-run single.

After a fielder’s choice play, Pablo Matos and Randy Petito pulled off back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases. The tying run scored on a groundout.

Manka pitched the final three innings in relief, holding the Vikings scoreless to earn the win.

The Gators’ game-winning run came in the sixth when Taylor Renegar ripped a two-run triple. On an appeal at third base, the second run was nullified for the runner missing the bag.

“We’re very happy,” said Gators coach Clint Montgomery. “We are not in it to lose.”

Both teams collected 10 base hits and committed two errors.

Matos (2-for-2), Vogelbach (2-for-4) and Manka (2-for-4) led the Gators’ offense.
