Knights ousted by perfection
Jackie Traina of Naples pitched her second consecutive perfect game in the Region 3-4A playoffs Friday night, but it was an appeal of an out call at first base that led to both Eagles runs in a 2-0 victory at North Fort Myers.
Traina and North’s Jackie Owen were locked in a scoreless pitching duel through four innings when the controversy arose in the top of the fifth.
With one out, A.J. Ervin bunted the ball in front of home plate and was called out at first base on a high throw. Naples appealed the play and the home plate umpire reversed the call on the premise the throw pulled the defender off the bag. The next batter lined out to Owen on the mound.
With two out, Traina drew a walk to put runners on first and second. A passed ball moved them up a base. Carissa Porter blooped a single down the line in shallow right field to drive in both runners.
“The out reversal was a game-changer,” said North coach Jeff Miner. “Instead of two out in the inning they got another opportunity.”
The Eagles managed just three singles off Owen (20-6), who ends her career with the Red Knights with a record of 65-20. Owen struck out six Eagles to bring her career strikeout total to 735.
Traina, on the other hand, was perfect even though the Eagles were guilty of a error on a foul pop fly. Traina struck out 18 batters, many of them on called third strikes.
“It was an outstanding ride for us this year,” said Miner. “The kids performed at a high level and believed in their ability. I’m proud of my players because they always battled back. Jackie (Owen) pitched a great game tonight, matching Naples almost pitch for pitch. Naples is a strong team, but we played well enough to win it with a break or two. In the end, our season is over and we are sad about that.”
