Tritons claim 4A-11 baseball title

By Staff | May 1, 2010

Taylor Walker helped his own cause with an RBI single in the fifth inning and the Mariner Tritons added an insurance run in the sixth to knock off Cypress Lake 3-1 Friday night to win the District 4A-11 Tournament championship at Terry Park.

Walker pitched a complete-game three-hitter, striking out three, to shut down the Panthers, who plated their only run in the first inning. That 1-0 lead only lasted until the second inning when Mariner’s Dan Cohill belted a solo home run to tie the game. It is Cohill’s third homer of the season.

The win advances the Tritons (24-4) to the Region 3-4A quarterfinal round Tuesday night on their home field against either Barron Collier or Palmetto Ridge, who were playing for the District 4-12A title Friday.

In the fifth inning, Cohill was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He was sacrificed to second before Walker came to the plate. Walker singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Cohill with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Audry Santana doubled to lead off the sixth and took third on a dropped third strike on the next batter. Daniel Alimonti walked to put runners on the corners. Alex Santana hit a ground ball to the left side of the infield, but a play at the plate trying to cut down Audry Santana with the third run was too late.
