Sheriff’s officers have charged man with AC thefts
Lehigh Acres deputies were called to a wooded area where a resident said he had found several items. When deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Brava (East) District arrived, they found two flat screen TVs still in boxes and several storage boxes filled with tools and office supplies.
According to a report today, investigators said the Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit conducted a flyover of the area to make sure there were not any more items nearby.
The items were discovered on Thursday, April 29 shortly after 3:30 p.m. by the person who found them in the wooded area.
While in the air, a truck was seen driving through the woods towards the area where the items were found. When the truck driver saw deputies, he immediately stopped and turned around.Other deputies stopped the vehicle in the area of Palm Beach Blvd. and Styles Rd.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Caleb Meredith, 19, and the passenger was identified as Derrick Harrison, 18. The investigation revealed both men had broken into a storage facility located at 21320 Meyrick Lane in Alva and are accused of removing items consistent with the items recovered in the woods, investigators said.
Both Meredith and Harrison were transported to the Lee County Jail on charges of burglary to a structure and grand theft.
During questioning of the suspects, deputies conducted awarrants check on each individual which revealed Meredith was wanted on multiple burglary and theft charges.
According to investigators, Meredith is responsible for a large number of the thefts involving air conditioning units in Lehigh Acres and Buckingham. Detectives say Meredith would scrap what they stole and pawn anything else of value they were able to steal during their crime spree.
Meredith has been charged with eight counts of felony burglary to a structure causing more than $1,000 in damage and eight counts of felony larceny theft – more than $300 but less than $5,000.
Authorities said he is responsible for crimes that occurred in the following locations: Horseshoe Lane, Fort Myers; Springline Lane, Fort Myers and Sunny Crest Lane, Fort Myers.
His last known address is listed as 19151 Parkinson Road, Alva.
