Suspect draws weapon on deputies and is fatally shot
Lee County deputies while on duty shot and killed a suspect after he pulled a gun on them Sunday night, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.
The four deputies have been put on administrative leave while an investigation takes place, which is standard practice.
According to the report, deputies responded Sunday night at around 10:10 p.m. to The Inn at the Springs at 8901 Highland Woods Blvd. in Bonita Springs after they had been notified of a shooting incident.
When deputies arrived at the site they discovered a male victim with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, authorities said. He has been identified as Craig Stephen Spitz, 42.
Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit spoke with the victim and witnesses on scene and said they were able to determine the identification of the suspect. Information obtained through the course of the investigation revealed the suspect may be at a home located off of Morton Avenue, Bonita Springs.
Deputies responded to the home to see if the suspect was at the residence. While investigators were on scene, the suspect approached the residence in his vehicle, according to authorities. Deputies attempted a traffic stop but the suspect fled, leading to a brief pursuit.
While pursuing the suspect, deputies initiated a PIT maneuver and managed to disable the suspect vehicle, investigators said. When deputies approached the vehicle in an attempt to make an arrest, they said the suspect pulled out a firearm and he was shot and killed. No officers were harmed during the incident.
