Miracle fall to Cubs, 6-1

By Staff | May 23, 2010

The Daytona Cubs returned the favor with a strong performance Saturday night for a 6-1 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium.

The Miracle made noise in the ninth inning with three consecutive hits, scoring their only run on a one-out RBI single by Brian Dozier, but Cubs reliever Luke Sommer induced an game-ending double-play ball by Nick Romero to end the threat. The Miracle finished with 10 hits, but just the single run.

Miracle starting pitcher Liam Hendriks (2-1) got off to a rough start, allowing three first-inning runs and was handed his first loss of the year. The Aussie lasted only four innings, giving up four earned runs on eights hits.

The Cubs pounded out 14 hits, including six for extra bases. All nine starters had at least one hit, with Jake Opitz leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance.

The Miracle had an impressive offensive showing Friday, but managed only singles against the Cubs on Saturday except for a one-out double by Evan Bigley in the ninth. Dozier followed with an RBI single, as he finished 2-for-4 in his Miracle debut after being called up from Low-A Beloit early Saturday. Chris Parmelee led the Miracle at the plate with three hits in four at-bats.

Daytona’s Rafael Dolis (2-3) lasted one out into the fifth inning, allowing no runs on six hits for his second win of the year. The 22-year-old struck out six and walked none.

The Cubs and Miracle wrap up a four game series and a nine-game homestand Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Dan Osterbrock (0-3, 4.50) will be on the mound for the Miracle.
