Miracle drop series finale to Cubs, 9-7

The Fort Myers Miracle rallied from a five-run deficit to take a 6-5 lead into the sixth inning, but the Daytona Cubs pulled away late for a 9-7 victory Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium.

The Miracle (18-25) dropped three of the four games in the series to the Cubs (18-26) and finished 3-6 in their nine-game homestand.

The Cubs took an early 5-0 lead after three innings, but the Miracle put together a huge fourth inning, scoring six runs to take the lead. Daytona starter Chris Archer walked two and gave up one hit to load the bases with one out for Brian Dozier, who drove in two runs with a single.Archer then reloaded the bases with a walk before being removed from the game.

Oswaldo Martinez entered and struggled with his control, walking in two runs with the bases loaded.Trailing 5-4, Chris Parmelee capped off the rally with a two-out two-run single.

Miracle starter Dan Osterbrock (0-4) pitched two scoreless innings before the wheels came off in the sixth. Three errors, combined with one walk and two base hits, led to the Cubs’ final four runs. Osterbrock was charged with the loss as he allowed a base hit and a man to reach on an error in the inning before handing the game off to Shooter Hunt. Even though Hunt gave up all four unearned runs in the inning, Osterbrock was was charged with the first two unearned runs for his fourth loss of the year.

The Miracle now go on a seven-game road trip starting Monday with three games in Bradenton and four at Brevard County.
