Man held without bond in death of grandson
A Lehigh Acres man remains in jail today after he was arraigned this past weekend and formally charged in the stabbing death of his 3-month-old grandson and in the stabbing of his 20-year-old daughter.
Manuel De Jesus Rosales, 43 of 1137 Gilbert Avenue South, Lehigh Acres is the Lee County Jail without bond.
The incident occurred at 1137 Gilbert Ave. Thursday night, May 20, when Rosales was arrested after deputies were called to the house and found his daughter in a pool of blood in the driveway barely breathing and her 3-month-old son covered with blood and not breathing. He was standing up against a van, according to reports, and offered no resistance when deputies handcuffed him.
He was arraigned this past weekend when he appeared via closed circuit TV from the Lee County Jail surrounded by three guards. Judge Leigh Frizzell Hayes, who revoked Rosales’ previous bond of $2 million which had been set Friday morning, said Rosales was a flight risk and a danger to the community and ruled he be held without bond. He will appear before court again on June 21.
Officials said the 3-month-old grandson died Friday. His daughter remained in critical condition this past weekend.
The charges against Rosales were upgraded to one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted first degree murder.
According to detectives, Rosales and his daughter, 20, were arguing outside their home when he attacked her with a knife. She ran into the house where a witness, a room mate, and the victim’s two children were located.
Investigators said Rosales chased her inside where he continued to threaten her. The witness attempted to intercede, but was threatened by Rosales who had a large knife. The daughter ran outside and Manuel chased her to the driveway where he was accused of slashing her throat, investigators said.
The witness locked the doors, but moments later Rosales broke through a rear sliding glass door. The witness fled through the front door and discovered the daughter lying in the driveway with her throat slashed.
Investigators said Rosales, a native of Honduras, came out of the house from the front door holding the youngest male child. He sat the child near the mother and is accused of slashing the infant’s throat so she could witness the act, investigators said. He then approached his daughter and is accused of slashing her throat two more times. It was reported that he screamed out “here’s your bastard.”
It wasn’t the first time there had been problems between Rosales and his daughter. Deputies were sent to another home in Lehigh in October of 2008 and discovered that Rosales Salazar’s face had been beaten. Her father was arrested and charged with battery but the charges were later dropped by the state attorney’s office. According to court records, Rosales had also tried to stab his daughter before.
In May of 2009, Rosales Salazar sought a domestic violence injunction. She reported that her father had broken a phone because he said she was talking on it too much. He was then accused of holding a knife to her throat after she had called the Sheriff’s Office for help.
Salazar was sent to the Abuse Counseling and Treatment Center (ACT) shelter for abused women in June of 2009.
