Immokalee man charged in armed robbery
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday that they received a call about an armed robbery at the AAA Discount Beverage in the Weavers Corner Shopping Plaza, 1800 N. Tamiami Trail, North Fort Myers at around 3:29 p.m. on Saturday.
When deputies arrived, they learned a masked, male suspect had entered the business and threatened the cashier with a knife while demanding cash, according to Larry King, a spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office.
He said the employee complied with the demands. The victim received a minor laceration to his neck and chin when the suspect put the knife to his throat, King said. The robber fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash and was last seen headed toward a nearby grocery store where deputies confronted him.
The suspect ran away, but was successfully taken into custody as deputies converged by foot and patrol cars on Bayshore Road, King said. A knife and the cash were recovered, King said.
No one was injured during the apprehension.
Detectives with the Robbery Unit of the Sheriff’s Office assumed the investigation. Witnesses positively identified the suspect as Joseph L. Burgess, 41, of Immokalee.
He faces multiple charges including robbery with a weapon, wearing a mask during the commission of a felony, committing aggravated battery during the commission of a first degree felony and resisting arrest. Burgess has been transported to the Lee County Jail.
