National ‘Ask Day’ is June 21

By Staff | Jun 16, 2010

The employes of the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital and the Child Advocacy Program of The Children’s Hospital are asking for your help to remind SW Florida about gun safety.

Summer is here and the kids will be out of school soon, very likely spending additional time visiting others or at home.

Be aware that it is possible your child will come into contact with a gun at your neighbor’s house, when playing with friends, or under other circumstances outside your home, or in your very own home.

Michele King, director of the Child Advocacy Program states, “Hiding guns is not enough. Kids are curious and if they find guns, they are likely to play with them.”

When sending children to play at a friend’s house, parents are encouraged to ask the question – “Is there a gun where my child plays?”

If the answer is no, that’s one less thing to worry about.

If the answer is yes, make sure all guns are stored unloaded and locked.

If there are any doubts about the safety of another home, invite the kids to your house instead. Most parents report that they never thought to ask this important question. For more information about the ASK Campaign go to www.AskingSavesKids.org.
