Gateway Charter School head Roles retires; Sara Abraham named principal

By Staff | Jul 6, 2010

After four years as leader of Gateway Charter High School, Joe Roles has announced that he will retire. His 38-year career as an educator, principal and coach has included bringing Gateway Charter High School into the spotlight as a first-class educational facility.

In 2007, he was recognized by the State of Florida as one of 60 principals to be honored as a Turnaround Principal of the Year for leading the high school from a “C” to an “A” on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

Roles will be succeeded by Sara Abraham, current principal of the K-8 Gateway Charter School. Abraham has been a Charter Schools USA principal and assistant principal for several years. During her tenure as principal at Six Mile Charter Academy, she brought the school grade to an “A” and has maintained an “A” at Gateway Charter School where she assumed the principal position two years ago.

“We all will miss Joe and wish him the very best in his retirement,” says Sherry Hage, vice president of education at Charter Schools USA. “At the same time, we are very excited to have Sara Abraham lead our K-12 educational system. Research shows that a continuum of education from Kindergarten through 12th grade provides students with a consistent and sustained learning path that ultimately helps them to achieve a higher level of success.”
