Miracle handed 1-0 setback

By Staff | Jul 20, 2010

The Lakeland Tigers scratched for a sixth-inning run without recording a hit and the bullpen made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle Monday night at Hammond Stadium.

The shutout comes one night after the Miracle recorded a 1-0 shutout of the Tigers.

Miracle starting pitcher Matt Williams pitched five innings of no-hit ball before reliever Shooter Hunt entered in the sixth. The right-hander walked the bases loaded and gave up the only run of the night on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Lennerton.

Hunt (1-4) got the loss. He only recorded one out in the sixth. Dakota Watts came in and stranded the bases loaded by coaxing a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.

Lakeland starter Jacob Tuner pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits for his first career win in the Florida State League. Detroit’s top prospect has made just five starts since a call-up from Low-A West Michigan. The 19-year-old was the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft.

Wilfredo Ramirez tossed two shutout innings in relief for the Tigers, and Jared Gayhart pitched a scoreless eighth. Erik Crichton pitched the ninth for his third save of the year.

Williams made a spot start for scheduled starter Bobby Lanigan, who was promoted to Double-A New Britain Monday afternoon. The Australian struck out four and walked two in his first start since 2008.

The four-game series is tied 1-1, as the Miracle face the Tigers at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.
