Edith Heywood-Mayers

Edith Maude Heywood- Mayers, 90, of Lehigh Acres, was born March 25, 1920 in Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara, in the then British Guiana (Guyana). She was the fourth of eight children born to William and Clothide Heywood. She was a nurse for the Georgetown Public Hospital in 1943. She later pursued her studies in England where she completed her studies as a state registered nurse and State certified midwife. She completed a Clinical Instructors course in Scotland and gained more practical experience working in the St. Alfege’s Hospital in England. On March 6, 1971 she married Francis A. Mayers.

She worked at the Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in nursing while in New Jersey. She retired at the age of 70, which was a total of 47 years of faithful and dedicated service to her fellow man. Edith and Francis moved to Lehigh Acres and became a vibrant part of the community in her church, First Community Congregational in Lehigh and the American Social Club where she was elected the chairperson of the Calling Circle.

She is survived by her sister, Ethel, a brother Hilton, sister-in-law Shirla, friends Marjorie and Coleen, step-children Roxanne and Francis, several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held on Sunday, July 25 at the First Community Congregational Church at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Deb Frysinger officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at Lee Memorial Park Cemetery.
