Bonnie can’t sideline Little League

By Staff | Jul 24, 2010

While Tropical Storm/Depression Bonnie blew through Southwest Florida on Friday, a number of sporting events were canceled by the wet weather.

The Fort Myers Miracle game at Hammond Stadium was postponed more than two hours before the 7 p.m. first pitch. The Miracle (14-12), who have won 10 of their last 13 games to pull within two games of the first-place St. Lucie Mets, will make up the game with a doubleheader starting at 5:05 p.m. Saturday at Hammond Stadium. Saturday night stock car racing at Punta Gorda Speedway also was called off.

Not so for the Little League State Softball Tournament Friday at Fleishman Park. The Little League (Major) Softball schedule got a late start, but was on track to catch up by the end of Friday.

“It rained off and on most of the day,” said tournament director Mert Leeman. “It never rained real hard, just a light drizzle with short periods of mild showers.”

A team from Miami never made it to the field, forcing a quick rescheduling.

Cape Coral won its first game 6-5 over Vero Beach, then dropped a 4-3 decision to New Tampa, which earlier beat Vero Beach 21-1. New Tampa won Pool A with Cape Coral the runnerup.

New Tampa and Cape advance to Saturday’s semifinals at 11 a.m. to face Pool B survivors St. Cloud and South Tampa, respectively. The winners play for the championship at noon Sunday.

Tallahassee is the host of the 10-11 Softball tournament with two games Friday and seven on tap for Saturday leading to the semifinals and championship matches on Sunday and Monday, respectively. The Cape Coral squad was to play one of the opening-round Pool B matches, but one team failed to show up to force a reshuffle of the schedule. Cape plays two games at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

At Lehigh, Little League (Major) Baseball and Junior Baseball Section 6 tournaments play out Saturday and Sunday.

The three-team Section 6 Senior Baseball bracket starts and ends Saturday at North Port.
