Marinell opens two-shot lead at Junior Masters
Chase Marinell of Cape Coral kept his great play going Thursday by firing the day’s low round of 69 to take command of the lead after two rounds in the boys’ 16-18 division of the 18th Henke/Berg Junior Masters golf tournament at Cypress Lake Country Club.
Thursday’s weather was the same as Wednesday’s, but the scores across the board were different – as in lower. Round two was full of birdies and pars over all the three age groups which has determined those who have a realistic chance for one of the three division titles after Friday’s third and final round.
Marinell, a Bishop Verot student, has a two-day total of 141 and two-stroke lead going into the final round. He is looking for his third straight title and fourth overall title. He sits ahead of Matthew Taylor (Naples) and Bishop Verot teammate Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers) and those three make up Friday’s final grouping. Other Cape boys playing in 16-18 include Josh Boguszewski (209), Bryr Austen(178), Kyle Schulte(161), Tyler Doyle(158), Dylan Hinkle (159), Michael Faulkner(160), and Jake Sherwin, who followed a first-round 74, with a second-round 75. He is at 149 for the
tournament and the only real challenger from Cape to take down Marinell.
Among the girls’ 13-15 division, Miko Dougherty not only leads the Cape contingent with a two-day total of 158, but is just two strokes behind leader Georgia Price of Fort Myers. Price shot 77 after a first-round 79 and leads the division with a 36-hole total of 156.
Dougherty shot 79 for the second straight day for a two-day total of 158. She is second and has good shot at winning Friday.
Rounding out the final grouping is Olivia Lynch, who shot 78 Thursday for a two-day total of 163. Other Cape girls are, Brittany Agricola(197), Kaitlin Schafe (187), and Kelsey Fallisch (185).
Dougherty looks to build on her back-to-back rounds of 79 to try and win Friday.
In the boys’ 13-15 division. Jonathan Lowrey of Fort Myers shot his second consecutive 72 Thursday and has a chance at the title Friday.
“I just wanted to come out and play like I did yesterday, make birdies and play smart,” said Lowrey after sinking a long putt to cement his 72 on the final hole. He sits at 144, six strokes ahead of Tommy Jewell (Naples), who fired a 73 in round two to at least give himself a glimmer on final day.
Cape’s Anthony Myers turned in a 77 Thursday for a 157 total to earn a spot in Friday’s final grouping. Other Cape
players include, Dylan Deforrest (187), Ross Lally (198), and Daichi Dougherty (180).
The tournament concludes with Friday’s final 18 holes with all three group titles still up for grabs. As usual, Cape Coral
is well represented with a strong showing.
