Coleman gets call from Cubs
Mariner High School pitching ace Casey Coleman got a call from the Chicago Cubs Monday and was in uniform when they hosted the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.
After making 20 starts for the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate Iowa Cubs, where he was 10-7 this season, Coleman became the first Florida Gulf Coast University player to make it to the major leagues.
Coleman had advanced in each of his three years with the Cubs organization since being selected in the 15th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, beginning with Class A Boise, Peoria and Daytona (2008), Double-A Tennessee (2009) and Iowa (2010).
Coleman turned in a solid July at Iowa, going 4-0 with a 2.79 ERA over five starts. The right-hander’s 10-7 record consumed 117 1/3 innings, recording 59 strikeouts and a Pacific Coast League-leading two complete games. Coleman’s 10 wins are tied for fourth in the PCL and tied for ninth in starts (20) and 16th in innings pitched.
With Casey now in the major leagues, the Coleman family becomes the first to have three generations of pitchers reach the major leagues. Casey’s father, Joe, played from 1965-79, making the 1972 All-Star Game as a member of the Detroit Tigers, and grandfather, Joe, was an All-Star in 1948, highlighting his 10-year career (1942-55).
Casey and his father also become the eighth father-son combination to have played for the Cubs, but the first father-son pitching combination to appear for the team. Joe was a member of the Cubs’ organization in 1976.
