By Staff | Aug 4, 2010

Ben Bendola, along with all of the Our Daily Bread feeding program volunteers, say the grand opening of Our Daily Bread Community Pantry in a new location at 1418 Homestead Road N. on Saturday, August 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The new location is two doors south of Christ United Methodist Church in Lehigh Acres. Parking will be in the church parking lot, according to spokeswoman Jane Mullikin.

“We are excited about the possibilities open to us now that we have a location of our own from which to serve the community. We are grateful to Christ United Methodist Church for its generous gift of a place we can call our own,” said Ben Bendola, executive director of the Our Daily Bread Community Pantry and food kitchen.

A well known community activist, Edythe Tapper, will oversee the food pantry operation where persons hoping for a helping hand will be welcomed to select provisions for their family two times each month, Mullikin said.

The last day for the feeding program was August 2. This meal was a celebration of Our Daily Bread’s 10th Anniversary and recognition of Josephine Travelto’s 10 years of dedicated volunteer service, Bendola said.

Over the years, as many as 70 to 80 people have eaten daily meals five days a week at the food pantry at the Christ United Methodist Church’s parish hall. In recent months, officials at the church, say the numbers have dwindled, bringing about the food pantry where residents can go and pick up food to take home and prepare.
