Lehigh’s Initiative update topic of Aug. 16 meeting
Members and guests of the Community Council of Lehigh Acres will hear from Bo Turbeville founding chairman of the Weed and Seed Initiative at their monthly Council meeting on August 16.
Turbeville will discuss the short-term setback Lehigh Acres Weed and Seed Initiative suffered with the recent announcement of no Weed and Seed competitive awards for new sites due to a 20 percent reduction in the program’s 2010 fiscal year appropriation from the prior year.
However, the loss in potential Weed and Seed funding will be more than offset with $175,920 from a federal grant starting Oct. 1. The Lee County Board of County Commissioners on June 8 authorized the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to apply for an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance grant to provide enhanced law enforcement support for Lehigh Acres and Bravo District.
You can learn how this will affect the work done by the subcommittees on law enforcement, community policing, prevention/intervention and treatment and neighborhood restoration and how this will affect Lehigh Acres.
The public is encouraged to attend. The Community Council meets monthly on the third Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Living Waters Christian Fellowship Church at 500 N. Sunshine Blvd. (next to Doc’s Collision north of Lee Blvd.) In addition to the guest speaker, the Council will conduct its monthly meeting which addresses concerns of Lehigh Acres citizens.
