Miracle lose pitchers’ duel 1-0
CLEARWATER – Clearwater Threshers right fielder Derrick Mitchell hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning, and that was the only run to cross the plate in a 1-0 shutout of the Fort Myers Miracle 1-0 Saturday night.
In a game that lasted just two hours, four minutes, Threshers starter Austin Hyatt (11-5) tossed seven shutout frames, allowing just two hits, and sent down the final 14 batters he faced to pick up the win.
Kane Holbrooks (1-3) went a season-high eight innings, but the mistake to Mitchell was the difference in the game as he took the tough-luck loss. Holbrooks allowed just four hits in the longest outing of his Twins minor league career.
The Miracle had runners at first and second in the eighth inning, but Thresher’s reliever Derrick Loop induced a sharp groundout to third from Brian Dozier to end the threat.
The Miracle’s best scoring opportunity came in the first as Angel Morales led off the game with a double, and Dozier followed with a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Hyatt struck out Evan Bigley on a 3-2 pitch, and then induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play from Nate Hanson to end the inning. The Miracle went hitless the rest of the night.
The Threshers took 3-of-4 from the Miracle in the series. After an off day Sunday, the Miracle meet the Jupiter Hammerheads Monday at Hammond Stadium.
