Crabs’ rally tops Miracle
CHARLOTTE – The Fort Myers Miracle held a hard-fought 2-0 lead going into the eighth inning Friday night, but the Charlotte Stone Crabs sent their entire order the plate in a 5-run rally to claim a 5-2 victory.
Crabs first baseman Mike Sheridan dealt the lethal blow, a bases-clearing double against reliever Jhon Garcia.
Garcia (0-1), who worked two innings of relief, took his first loss in his fifth appearance for the Miracle. Only three of the runs were earned, with a poorly-timed error contributing to the Crabs comeback.
The rally spoiled what would have been an excellent win as Miracle starter Kane Holbrooks worked six shutout innings to outduel Charlotte’s Matt Moore.
Moore struck out 10 of the first 12 batters he faced, but the Miracle scraped for one run in the fifth. Nick Romero tripled. Two pitches later, a Moore fastball sailed over the catcher’s head, allowing Romero to score the game’s first run.
Moore struck out two more in the fifth to make it 12 of a possible 15 outs.
The Miracle (20-26) added an insurance run in the eighth on Nate Hanson’s two-out RBI single.
The Miracle look to snap a six-game losing streak at Charlotte (24-24) in Saturday’s final game of the series.
