By Staff | Aug 16, 2010

JUPITER – After no success whatsoever in doubleheaders this season, the Fort Myers Miracle won two seven-inning games Sunday against the Jupiter Hammerheads. The Miracle won the first game 5-4 in nine innings and held on in the nightcap to win 3-2.

The Miracle had 0-8 record in doubleheaders on the season before Sunday. Including suspended games, they were 2-12.

In Sunday’s nightcap, the bullpen held onto a one-run lead, but the Hammerheads didn’t make it easy. With runners at second and third an no outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jhon Garcia (1-1) got two groundouts and a flyout to hold on for the win. It is his first victory in a Miracle uniform, working three innings in relief of Steve Blevins.

Blevins gave the Miracle four strong innings in his first professional start, giving up just one run on three hits.

The Miracle scored two runs in the first inning off Andy Loomis. The lefty loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter, setting up Nick Romero’s scorching double that put the Miracle up 2-0. Angel Morales added an RBI double in the sixth for a 3-1 lead.

Loomis (2-2) was charged the loss, giving up two earned runs in three innings of work.

In game one, the Miracle held a 4-3 lead with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Paul Gran sent the game into extras with a solo home run off Santos Arias. After Jupiter stranded the bases loaded in the 8th, Drew Thompson drove home Chris Herrmann to give the Miracle a 5-4 edge in the top of the 9th. Dakota Watts pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for his third save of the year, striking out the final two batters.

Arias (3-5) was credited with the win. He worked eight innings, giving up four earned runs on 12 hits.

Chris Squires (0-1) took the loss for Jupiter. After pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, he gave up an infield hit to Herrmann to start the ninth. Allan De San Miguel put the runner at second with a sac-bunt to set up the game-winning hit for Thompson.

Angel Morales finished with four hits in the two games, going 4-for-8 with two doubles and an RBI. Brian Dozier was 4-for-7 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

The Miracle are 12-4 against Jupiter this season, winning six straight. They play again Monday and Tuesday in their final matchups of the season.
