Crabs halt Miracle win streak 8-1
After winning five straight games, the Fort Myers Miracle pitching staff issued a league-high 14 walks which fueled the Charlotte Stone Crabe to an 8-1 rout Thursday night at Hammond Stadium.
Tied 1-1 through three innings, the Crabs pulled away with a run in the fourth and never looked back.
Miracle starter Bruce Pugh (6-10) lasted five innings, giving up just two earned runs, but took the loss. Pugh gave up just five hits, but issued a season-high of six walks.
The Miracle bullpen combined to walk the rest of the Stone Crab hitters, with the total eclipsing a league high for the season. The previous FSL high was 12 base on balls, and the Miracle season high was 11.
Steve Blevins issued three walks in one inning, Shooter Hunt issued four straight walks without recording an out, and Jhon Garcia added the final one.
The Miracle tied the game in the bottom of the first with their only run of the night. Nick Romero doubled with two outs against Stone Crabs starter Joe Cruz, and scored on an RBI base hit by Nate Hanson. Romero finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, and Hanson was 2-for-3.
Cruz (12-5) worked five strenuous innings, giving up just one earned run after scattering eight hits. He worked out of several jams on the night, stranding eight Miracle runners in his outing.
The Miracle went hitless the rest of the night against Charlotte’s bullpen.
The Miracle go for a win in the final head-to-head matchup with the Stone Crabs this season Friday night. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium.
