Four Miracle pitchers toss two-hit gem in 4-1 win Tuesday night

By Staff | Sep 1, 2010

Alex Wimmers, the first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins, tossed five hitless innings to earn his first professional win Tuesday night as the Fort Myers Miracle beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 4-1 at Hammond Stadium.

Four Miracle pitchers combined to limit the Cardinals to just two hits. The Miracle now have won five in a row against the Cards and six of their last seven.

Jared Bogany tripled to lead off the eighth inning to break up the no-hit bid against Miracle reliever Matt Schuld.

Wimmers (1-0), who pitched for the Ohio State Buckeyes the past two seasons, limited the Cardinals to a second-inning walk. He struck out a career-high of six.

Dan Osterbrock pitched a 1-2-3 sixth and Kane Holbrooks issued a walk in the seventh, but erased it with an inning-ending double play. Schuld, making just his fifth appearance of the year, gave up the only run as Bogany scored later in the eighth on a sac-fly by Richard Racobaldo. Ryan Jackson singled with two outs in the ninth for the Cards’ second hit of the night. Schuld earned his second career save.

Allan De San Miguel broke open a scoreless game in the fourth, crushing a three-run home run off Cardinals stater Arquimedes Nieto. Deibinson Romero singled home Nick Romero in the fifth inning. Deibinson Romero finished a season-best 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Nieto (8-7) took the loss, lasting just four innings.

It was the shortest game played at Hammond Stadium this season, lasting just 2 hours, two minutes.

The Miracle face the Cardinals in two more games at Hammond Stadium before wrapping up the season on the road in St. Luce this week.
