Miracle squeak 1-0 Wednesday night

By Staff | Sep 2, 2010

With two outs and a man at second in the eighth inning, Fort Myers Miracle center fielder Jhonathan Goncalves singled up the middle to bring home Allan De San Miguel to break a scoreless game and beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 1-0 Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium.

The Miracle now have won six straight over the Cardinals and move within two games of first place in the Florida State League South Division standings with four games to play.

Bradenton has lost three straight in St. Lucie, after holding a 4 1/2-game lead in entering Tuesday’s games.

In the decisive eighth, Nate Hanson led off with a single. Chris Herrmann advanced him to second before a wild pitch sent Hanson to third. De San Miguel then grounded to short, with Hanson being caught in a rundown trying to score the go-ahead run. De San Miguel advanced to second on a passed ball.

Goncalves then delivered the winning hit with a sharp line drive up the middle.

Jhon Garcia allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but completed the shutout for the Miracle pitching staff that only allowed five hits. They’ve allowed the Cardinals just seven hits in the series so far, and have only given up five runs to the Cardinals in their last five games. Garcia picked up his second save of the year.

Brett Carroll (1-0) picked up the win, tossing three shutout frames in relief of Liam Hendriks.

The Miracle (33-31) play their final home game of the season Thursday night.
