Seahawks dominate Tritons

By Staff | Sep 4, 2010

The Cape Coral Seahawks dominated their crosstown rival Mariner Tritons 56-14 Friday night in the Black and Blue Bowl at Dave Warkentin Field.

In the series that began in 1987, Mariner has won 13 times to Cape’s 11, but the Seahawks have won the last six years in a row.

The Seahawks got the first break in the game when Mariner quarterback J.T. Etnoyer tried to throw a swing pass, but was hit and the ball bounced off one of his linemen and right into the hands of Edsel Caprice, who ran 60 yards untouched into the end zone.

The Seahawks got their second touchdown on their first possession. On second-and-six from the 46, T.J. Johnson busted tackles and raced 54 yards to the end zone.

The Seahawks added another TD and field goal, but the Tritons were not going to give up. They put together a sustained drive and scored just before half when Etnoyer pushed it in from one yard out with the help of his fullback. That gave Mariner some hope and momentum.

“We had to come out and answer the Tritons’ drive at the end of the first half, ” said Seahawks coach Brad Metheny. “They had built some momentum and we wanted to leave no doubt as to the game’s outcome.”

What happened was a lightning-quick score for the Seahawks, and then a turnover by the Tritons gave Cape a second score early in the second half.

Jovan Ojeda took the second-half kickoff and returned it to the Mariner 40. On the first play, Prince Holloway split the defense for a TD.

A snap went over punter John Teeter’s head and Cape got the ball on the Mariner 3-yard line. Two plays later Dustin Thibadeau scored a touchdown.

Cape plays at Fort Myers and Mariner hosts North Port next Friday.
