By Staff | Sep 6, 2010

PORT ST. LUCIE – After taking an early 1-0 lead the second inning Saturday night, the St. Lucie Mets lineup terrorized an inexperience Miracle pitching staff by scoring eight runs through the first four innings and never looked back in a 8-2 six-inning victory. Heavy rains came through the St. Lucie area in the bottom of the sixth inning and field conditions were unplayable to finish the game.

With the loss, Fort Myers officially was eliminated from possible playoff contention. Bradenton clinched the Florida State League’s South Division second-half title as a result, and will take on the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the first round of the playoffs beginning Tuesday.

Recently called-up pitchers Nick Alloway and Brett Carroll combined to give up eight earned runs in the first four innings. Alloway, who made his first start FSL, gave up five runs in 2 2/3 innings of work for the loss. With the Miracle up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Stefan Welch got the scoring started for the Mets with a two-run triple. Richard Lucas followed with an RBI single to put them up 3-1.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the third, Brian Dozier smacked a solo home run off St. Lucie starter Jim Fuller to bring the Miracle within a run. They then rallied to load the bases on three consecutive singles, but came away with nothing as Nate Hanson lined out to second and Allan De San Miguel grounded to short.

The Miracle also wasted a scoring opportunity in the second after scoring their first run of the game on an RBI single by Hanson putting runners at second and third with no outs. Fuller struck out De San Miguel, Drew Thompson, and Jhonathan Goncalves.

With a 3-2 score in the third, the Mets continued their offensive onslaught. Stefan Welch picked up a two-run single in the third to knock Alloway out of the game. Carroll got the final out of the third without any further damage, but gave up three runs on four hits in the fourth to give the Mets a commanding 8-2 advantage.

The Miracle played the last game of the the season Sunday against the Mets.
